Conservative vs Progressive

My father was an old NH, Yankee conservative and my mother and English liberal.  I've spent my whole life thinking about the tension between conservatism and progressiveness.

I value progressive government to help out the needy and make our society better, but I also value self-reliance and responsibility, fiscal conservatism and caution in implementing government programs. I value the benefits of capitalism and a free market but also see the great good that government can do for our world.

In the end I realize that our society and our problems are complex and that usually there are trade offs and no easy answers.

Good governance requires integrity, sacrifice and hard work. I'm dedicating my life to helping make the world a better place.

Here are some of the rules that guide my thinking

  • Integrity, truth and justice are essential. This includes keeping excessive money and the excessive influence of special interests out of our politics.
  • I believe that we should take care of people in our society while calling for them to be responsible and the best they can be. Noone should go hungry, unhoused or without medical care.
  • I believe in treating all people fairly and justly.
  • I believe in the importance of listening. There is always more than one side to a story. Seek first to understand then to be understood.
  • I am a conservative progressive. I believe in being fiscally conservative which means balancing our budgets and spending our tax dollars wisely and sparingly on government programs and services. We should be cautious in implementing programs.
  • My progressive side believes government can be a positive influence in our society. Government programs and initiatives can make our world a better place in ways that the free market will not. Broadband support to implement internet access in rural areas is one example of this. It couldn't happen without government support.
  • Where there are issues, I believe in fixing and improving our institutions not tearing them down.
  • While I believe that we should be careful with regulations and government interference in our lives and keep them to a minimum, I know that they are necessary for a safe, harmonious society. This is always a work in progress.
